Recycling containers placed around Memorial Stadium give Mizzou Tiger football fans a convenient way to recycle their beverage containers.

The black-and-gold flags are flying at Memorial Stadium this week, signaling the Mizzou Tigers' 2007 home opener Saturday, September 15. The opening game will also be the kick-off for the third season of Tiger Tailgating.

A partnership between MU Campus Facilities – Landscape Services, Anheuser-Busch Recycling, MU Intercollegiate Athletics, Sustain Mizzou, City of Columbia and N.H. Scheppers Distributing, the Tiger Tailgating program has diverted from the landfill more than 30 tons of recyclable materials since its inception in 2005.

"This program gives Mizzou football fans a convenient way to recycle their beverage containers while tailgating," said Steve Burdic, CF-LS solid waste and recycling coordinator. "We collect aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic beverage containers marked Code One or Two, and stacks of cardboard. Drink cups aren't included, though, because they aren't recyclable."

The program began when Anheuser-Busch Recycling offered to provide MU with recycling containers and start-up financial support. Volunteers from Sustain Mizzou, a student environmental organization, serve as the Anheuser-Busch Green Team. The students distribute recycling bags, provide recycling information, thank tailgaters for recycling their beverage containers and collect filled recycling bags. MU Campus Facilities personnel then take the bags to roll-off containers provided by the City of Columbia's Public Works Department. The city collects the containers and sorts, weighs and bales the recyclables at its Material Recovery Facility.

Tiger Tailgating collected 11 tons of material its first year. MU, Anheuser-Busch Recycling and the Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District pooled funds for the second season to purchase 250 recycling containers and a shed in which to store them. With more planning, experience and funding, the amount of recyclables collected in 2006 jumped to over 19 tons.

"We've received a lot of positive comments about the program from football fans," said Burdic. "People appreciate the effort we make to help them keep the games clean and green."
