Tiger Treasures Rummage Sale a huge success

By all measures, MU's first end-of-semester recycling event was a resounding success.
More than 15 tons of "treasures" were diverted from the landfill and sold at the June 2 Tiger Treasures Rummage Sale. The sale raised more than $10,000 for The Salvation Army's charitable programs.
"If we would've had twice the amount of donated items, we could have sold them," said Steve Burdic, MU Campus Facilities – Landscape Services' solid waste and recycling coordinator.
A swarm of bargain-hunters
On the morning of the sale, 694 people paid the $5 early-bird admission fee to get inside Memorial Stadium during the hour before the sale opened to the public at 7 a.m.
Most of the electronic items and housewares were cleaned out within that first hour.
Latecomers still had plenty to choose from, though. Racks of clothing, rows of shoes, and stacks of books awaited bargain hunters. Most items were priced $5 or less. Items not sold at the rummage sale were taken by The Salvation Army to sell in its stores. All proceeds from the sale and admission fees benefit the organization's local charitable programs.
"It's been a learning experience and we couldn't be happier with the results," said CF associate director Phil Shocklee. "We'll have a lot of ideas on how to make this even more successful next year."
