Campus Facilities helps hard-hit Missouri communities

Campus Facilities' volunteers prepare to take a convoy of trucks to southwest Missouri to help the area dig out from the aftermath of a series of winter storms.
A team of 18 Campus Facilities volunteers left Wednesday, January 17 to help southwest and south-central Missouri dig out from under a thick layer of ice and debris after three winter storms crippled the state from southwest Missouri to St. Louis.
“They’re really going to be busy down there,” said Pete Millier, Campus Facilities Landscape Services director. “People are still unable to get out of their homes. Local rescue vehicles are everywhere helping dig out folks and trees are everywhere across the streets and roadways. It’s one big mess.”
Campus Facilities’ volunteers were sent to Lebanon, the county seat of Laclede County, the area in most immediate need of help. Thirty-four counties and the city of St. Louis were included in a federal disaster declaration issued January 16.
Construction Services manager David Potter says the team will split into three crews, with smaller teams working in Lebanon, Richland and Conway, Mo.
In addition to volunteers, Campus Facilities sent three dump trucks, three flatbed trucks, two trailers, two skid steers, a pickup truck, numerous chain saws and other tools.
“Everyone was eager to get started and in good spirits,” Potter said.
The volunteers recently came off a weekend shift of cleaning up the MU campus, itself hit with ice and snow over the holiday weekend. The volunteers are expected to be needed through the end of the week and possibly through the weekend.
The request for volunteers came from the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency through the Missouri Department of Higher Education.
