Research Space Survey
Space Planning and Management is conducting the FY2005 Research Space Survey. The
purpose of this survey is to gather data on the number of FTE who are performing
university funded and externally funded research. This information will be used to help
the campus plan for adequate research space.
- Verify the accuracy of your employee listing and FTE percentages and add any
other individuals who are performing research in your college or department, such
as:
- Emeritus Faculty
- Visiting Researchers
- People paid by other colleges/departments or administrative units to whom
you provide research space in you unit
- Undergraduate and graduate students
- Other employees not listed
Use the following methodology to estimate FTE for emeritus professors and
visiting researchers:
Average number of hours per week worked performing some type of
research activity divided by 40 hours in a workweek. Example: 20 hours
worked divided by 40 hours in a week=50% FTE or an appointment of .5.
- Under the column entitled, "Performs Research," please circle "Y" for yes or "N"
for no.
- If "Y" has been circled, please fill in the next column by indication the type of
research space currently being used by the individual.
Example: Wet lab, dry lab, animal labs, etc.
- Please indicate in the next column which college/department is providing this
individual research space if your college/department is not.
- Please indicate the percent time this individual spends in conducting university
funded research and the percent time spent conducting externally funded research.
In the next column, indicate the total of the two. Round to the nearest 5% in each
column. Definitions of the two types of funding are shown below.
- University Funded Research
Includes all research activities FUNDED BY THE UNIVERSITY from
any source of separately budgeted funds (General Operating, Designated,
etc.). An example of University funded research is Divisional Research
Centers, Dalton Research Center (ledger 2), Start-up Funds (ledger 2),
Research Council (ledger 2), Research Board (ledger 3), Research
Incentive Funds (RIF) (ledger 2) and Alzheimer (ledger 6). Research
activities supported by departmental instruction budgets are included in
instruction.
- Externally Funded Research
Includes all research activities FUNDED BY EXTERNAL AGENCIES,
e.g., grants (ledger 5) from federal and state government, foundations, etc.,
and gift funds (ledger 4) restricted by the donor to research use. Teaching
and training grants and public service grants are included in Instruction
and Public Service respectively.
- Please indicate under the columns entitled, "Location of Research, Building No.,
Room No.’s," the actual location of the research being performed. If the research
is performed in non-university space, please indicate this by writing "Non-
University Space" across these two columns.
- When you have completed the Research Space Survey, please PRINT your name,
phone number, and the date the survey was completed in the space provide in the
lower left-hand corner of the survey form.
