Instructional Space Survey
Space Planning and Management is conducting a FY2004 Instructional Space Survey. The course data used in this survey is from fall 2004. The purpose of this survey is to obtain the number of contact hours by type of space required and to measure the amount of space needed by room type for the instructional activities offered by your college. The following is a list of guidelines and definitions that are to be used as a framework for completing this survey.Room Type Categories & Definitions
Instructional Facilities – Seminar, classrooms, lecture rooms, auditoriums that are used for the delivery of instruction. Seating may be fixed or movable. Capacity definitions:Seminar room = 1 to 20 seats
Classrooms = 21 to 59 seats
Lecture rooms = 60 to 150 seats
Auditoriums = 151 or >seats Class Laboratories – A room used primarily for formally or regularly scheduled classes that require special purpose equipment or a specific room configuration for student participation, experimentation, observation, or practice in an academic discipline. Examples: Teaching laboratories, instructional shops etc. that are used primarily for group instruction in formally or regularly scheduled classes. Open Laboratories – A room used primarily for individual or group instruction that is informally scheduled, unscheduled, or open. Examples: Music practice rooms, language laboratories, studios, computer labs, etc. Other Institutional Facilities – Any other facility types that may be used for instruction, excluding classrooms, class laboratories, and open laboratories. Examples: Office, conference room, clinical lab, exam room, etc.
Process for completing the Instructional Space Survey
The following is the step process for completing the FY2005 Instructional Space Survey:- Please verify for accuracy and make changes as necessary to the following
information on the attached survey sheet(s):
- The section type.
- The authorized capacity.
- The room capacity.
- Please add on any course(s) that are missing and fill in the appropriate information under each heading.
- For each course, please indicate the number of contact hours in the "contact hrs. per week" column. Also, indicate the type of space you require to teach the course. Below is an example:
- Please indicate Yes or No on whether the section meets the entire semester in the column entitled "Meets All Semester." If you answered Yes, then skip step 5 and go to step 6.
- If you responded No to sep 4, please indicate the number of day(s) or week(s) that the section meets in the column entitled "Number of Day(s) or Week(s)."
- In addition to the information supplied in number 3, if a course is offered in facilities that are departmentally controlled, please indicate the building and room number where the instruction takes place in the column marked "building and room if dept. controlled."
- If courses are taught in non-university space please indicate where the course is taught in the "other" category.
- For courses that have varying credit or are individual lessons, please indicate the average number of contact hours by room type for these classes.
- When you are finished completing this survey, please print your name, phone number, and the date the survey was filled out in the space provided on the form.
