Tiger Tailgate Recycling

A partnership between the MU Sustainability Office, Anheuser-Busch Recycling, MU Intercollegiate Athletics, Sustain Mizzou, City of Columbia, the Mid-Missouri Solid Waste Management District and N.H. Scheppers Distributing, the Tiger Tailgate Recycling program collects aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers from tailgating fans at University of Missouri home football games. The program has diverted from the landfill about 78 tons of recyclable materials since its inception in 2005.

Tiger Tailgate Recycling began when Anheuser-Busch Recycling offered to provide MU with recycling containers and start-up financial support. Volunteers from Sustain Mizzou, a student environmental organization, serve as the Anheuser-Busch Green Team. The students distribute recycling bags, provide recycling information, thank tailgaters for recycling their beverage containers and collect filled recycling bags. MU Campus Facilities personnel then take the bags to roll-off containers provided by the City of Columbia's Public Works Department. The city collects the containers and sorts, weighs and bales the recyclables at its Material Recovery Facility.

Collection rates have increased significantly since the program began, from 11 tons in 2005 to about 24 tons in 2008.
