Step by Step: Seven simple steps you can take to save energy
ith 30,000 people on campus, MU uses a lot
of energy. Campus Facilities has many programs for conserving energy
and keeping costs down. But energy users on campus — that's you! — can
make the biggest difference in conserving energy resources.
Here are seven simple steps that you can take to
save energy:
- Turn off the lights when you leave
Turn off lights when you leave classrooms, offices,
and restrooms. Lighting is a major portion of MU's
electricity bill!
- Turn off small appliances when you aren't using them
Turn off small appliances and equipment such
as coffee pots, radios, typewriters, and copiers
when you are done using them. Never leave them running
all day or all night.
- Practice green computing
A key aspect of green computing is turning on
your C P U or printer only when you plan to use it.
More tips on green computing are listed in the "MU
Guide to Green Computing:" request a copy from Campus
Facilities at 882-3301.
- Share your stuff (you might make new friends too)
This is a childhood lesson that makes good environmental
sense. Can you put one coffee pot in a central location
for all offices to share? How about a few people
sharing one printer?
- Report leaky faucets, drafty doors and other problems
Drips and drafts add up to wasted energy and
cost. Report maintenance problems to the Service
Desk at 882-8211.
- Buy green when purchasing your office equipment
You can now purchase office equipment and computers
that power down and use less energy. They are identified
by the Energy Star logo. Computer Spectrum carries
Energy Star products.
- Recycle, recycle, recycle
Almost every campus building has green roller
barrels for mixed office paper recycling. MU also
recycles newsprint, cardboard, milk jugs, cans, glass,
and brown bags. The MU recycling brochure lists more
information on what you can recycle and where to
do it: request a copy from the MU Recycling Committee
at 882-5054.
