What's in a name: Swallow Hall was named for George C. Swallow (1817-1899), MU's first professor of geology, chemistry & agriculture. Swallow, who helped organize the College of Agriculture and served as its dean, was a controversial figure. Although popular with students and some Missouri farmers, Swallow did not get along with his colleagues or President Samuel Spahr Laws. Swallow even refused the president's request that he resign. He eventually was dismissed. Thirty-one years after Swallow's death, his contributions to MU were recognized when the building was renamed in his honor.
