Energy Management Control Systems

A computerized system allows EMCS to monitor and control conditions in 109 buildings across campus.

The Energy Management Control Systems (EMCS) group is responsible for designing, installing, and maintaining building automation systems throughout the campus. These systems allow us to control heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, lighting systems and mechanical equipment in classrooms, offices, residence halls, cafeterias, auditoriums, research facilities, gymnasiums and many other buildings on MU's 13.7 million square foot campus. Currently we monitor and control over 36,000 control points in 109 buildings, encompassing over 6 million square feet.

The process control network allows constant monitoring, system adjustments, programming, troubleshooting, and trending.

Testing, Adjusting and Balancing (TAB)

The Testing, Adjusting and Balancing (TAB) group of Energy Management performs commissioning of Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems on campus. This group tests the equipment to verify it will perform as designed and then balances the systems to get proper air and water flow to equipment and spaces as shown on construction documents. This work is performed for new construction and renovation projects. The group also conducts intial tests and balances of lab animal areas for certification and balances fume hood systems for testing by MU Environmental Health and Safety.

Both the EMCS and TAB groups are funded on a recharge basis. Installation, programming, and commissioning are performed in-house at half the cost of an outside contractor.

Insulation & Abatement Services

Insulation Services

The Energy Management Insulation Services group:

  • provides timely and cost-effective asbestos abatement
  • provides mechanical insulation services
  • enhances campus energy conservation efforts by using state-of-the-art insulation materials and application techniques

The asbestos abatement group has been trained to safely remove and dispose of asbestos-containing materials, while the insulation group applies mechanical insulation on abated equipment and for new installations.

Some asbestos-containing materials are present in the campus’ utility systems. Using our in-house expertise to provide timely abatement and re-insulation is necessary for continued reliable utility operations.

Utility Mapping

Using state-of-the-art Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) the Utility Mapping group maintains accurate utility data detailing locations of 10 different underground campus utility systems, totaling over 200 miles of lines/pipes and over 15,000 pieces of equipment. By integrating maps, drawings, databases, images, video and documents, our GIS provides the necessary information to various users for providing safe, reliable and cost-effective utility service to MU.

Underground Locates

Any project involving digging on the MU campus requires an underground locate. Please contact Energy Management, or fill out the online form.
