What YOU can do to save energy at MU

When we're talking about being efficient and saving energy, there are "two sides of the coin." On one side, MU's buildings and energy systems need to be as efficient as possible. On the other side, MU's energy users need to develop efficient, energy-saving habits.

At MU, we're constantly working on the efficiency of our energy systems and evaluating improvements at the power plant and in our buildings.

But once we've done our part, it is up to you – MU students, faculty and staff – to save energy. Here are some tips to get you started.

Tip 1: Turn off Lights

Turn off lights when you leave classrooms, offices, labs, restrooms, and dorm rooms. Lighting is one of the biggest parts of MU's electricity budget!

Tip 2: Turn off Small Appliances

Turn off small appliances and equipment such as coffee pots, radios, typewriters, and copiers when you are finished using them. Do not leave them running!

Tip 3: Practice Green Computing

A key aspect of green computing (energy efficient computers and related equipment) is turning on your monitor or printer only when you plan to use it. (See our brochure, "MU Guide to Green Computing," for more information.)

Tip 4: Share Your Stuff

This is a childhood lesson that makes good environmental sense. Can you put one coffee pot in a central location for several offices to share? How about a few people sharing one printer? Can you and your roommates share one refrigerator or microwave?

Tip 5: Report Problems

Report maintenance problems, such as leaky faucets and drafty windows, to the Campus Facilities Customer Service Desk at 882-8211. These drips and drafts add up to a lot of wasted energy and cost.

Tip: 6 Buy Green

Purchase office equipment and computers that power down and use less energy. They are identified by the Energy Star logo. Computer Spectrum carries many Energy Star products at competitive prices.
