Underground Locates
Any project involving digging on the MU campus requires an underground locate by Campus Facilities – Energy Management. Missouri Law requires that any person making or beginning any excavation must notify in advance all underground facility owners which may be affected by the excavation at least two (2) days and not more than 10 days before the work commences.
What projects require an underground locate?
Some examples of projects that require underground locates include, but are not limited to:
- Installing fence or sign posts
- Trenching
- Driven Tent Stakes
- Grading
Failure to have utility lines located before digging can cause serious injury or death, damage to property or harm to research due to loss of service. CALL BEFORE YOU DIG!
All requests for underground locates on the MU campus must be sent to Energy Management. Energy Management will schedule the appropriate utility operators to locate their facilities through the use of Missouri One Call Systems, Inc, direct contact or by fax.

Who can request an underground locate?
Anyone may request an underground locate when needed.
When a locate is requested in the design phase of a project, the engineer should take utility drawings to the site for verification. Any changes shall be noted on the drawings for future revision and forwarded to the Energy Management's Utility Mapping Group.
Campus Facilities units directing or overseeing excavation on campus are responsible for:
- verifying the location of any buried utility or sewer lines
- arranging for underground locates
Construction contractors working on the MU campus must submit a request for an underground locate to the PD&C Construction Project Manager for that project. The Construction Project Manager will arrange for the underground locate through Energy Management.
Non-University Utility Providers
All requests will be directed to Energy Management through the use of Missouri One Call Systems.
General Information
If during excavation, utilities are found to be different in size, location or number than expected contact the Energy Management Utility Mapping Group at 882-3094 prior to closing the excavation so information can be updated.
Normally uunderground locates are provided by Energy Management free of charge, unless the locate is outside the area of responsibility for Energy Management.
Periodically a utility is uncovered during excavation that was not shown on any plans. This "dig-up" will be handled as an emergency. This will allow for the utility to be identified and for the project to proceed without delay.
